Green beans are one of those vegetables I always keep in the fridge because they are easy to cook and go with just about anything. If I do not have fresh green beans, I most definitely have a pack or 2 frozen green beans in my freezer.

The air fryer has honestly become my favorite way to make them. It takes only a few minutes, and the beans come out tender with a little crisp on the outside, which my family actually prefers over boiled or steamed green beans.

Ingredients needed

ingredients to make air fryer green beans.
  • Fresh Green Beans: I do like using fresh green beans. Just trim off the edges. You may also use frozen green beans.
  • Olive Oil: Any other oil of your choice will work. I sometimes like using avocado oil.
  • Kosher salt and pepper, to taste
  • Garlic Powder: You may use fresh garlic, but mince it well.
  • Dried Basil: Or any other seasoning of your choice. Do not use fresh basil.
  • Optional, to serve: Shaved parmesan cheese, lemon wedges

Recipe Tips

  • Trim the ends first: Remove the tough stem ends before cooking for the best texture.
  • Dry the beans well: After washing, pat the green beans dry so they roast rather than steam in the air fryer.
  • Don’t overcrowd the basket: Spread the beans in a single layer so they cook evenly and get slightly crisp.
  • Shake halfway through cooking: This helps them cook evenly and prevents burning.
  • Adjust cooking time: Thinner beans cook faster, while thicker beans may need an extra minute or two.

Common Questions

Do I need to soak green beans before cooking?

You do not need to soak green beans before cooking them. You can blanch them in salted water to help tenderize it but is not really necessary.

Do I need to blanch green beans before air frying?

No. Fresh green beans can go straight into the air fryer after trimming and seasoning.

Can I use frozen green beans?

Yes, but they may be softer. Cook them for a few more minutes and shake the basket halfway through.

How long do green beans take in the air fryer?

Most green beans cook in the air fryer in about 8–10 minutes at 380°F, depending on their size.

Flavor Variations

These green beans are great with simple seasoning, but you can easily switch up the flavor:

  • Garlic Parmesan: Toss with grated parmesan after cooking
  • Lemon Pepper: Add fresh lemon juice and cracked pepper
  • Spicy: Sprinkle with chili flakes or a little sriracha
  • Asian-inspired: Toss with sesame oil and sesame seeds

Storage Tips

  • Refrigerator: Store leftovers for up to 3 days
  • Reheating: Air fry for a few minutes to crisp them back up
  • Freezing: Not recommended since cooked green beans become soft
