I am always hesitant to try out viral TikTok recipes. But I had to try this one! I have tried quite a few of them, and I wasn’t too impressed with some. But this cottage cheese edible cookie dough recipe was surprisingly good. Sounds revolting, right? But I promise it’s good! My kids rated it a 10/10. They had it with some crackers and you can also just gran a spoon and dive right in.

Tips Before You Get Started

Here are some helpful tips for making this high-protein cookie dough so it turns out smooth, tasty, and with the right texture:

  1. Blend the cottage cheese: Don’t try to skip this step. To get a smooth texture, I recommend you blend the Cottage cheese in a food processor or blender until creamy.
  2. Cottage cheese: Use full-fat or 2% cottage cheese for richer flavor and better consistency. If you go with Fat-free, it can make the dough watery.
  3. Drain Cottage Cheese: Some cottage cheeses are quite watery. I recommend you strain it with a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth before.
  4. Chill the dough: After mixing the dough and it is complete, I like to chill the dough for 15–30 minutes. It helps the flavors meld and the dough firm up.
  5. Protein boost option: If you want extra protein, you can mix in a bit of vanilla protein powder.
  6. Adjust Texture: If you feel like the dough is too loose to your liking, add in a little oat flour or almond flour. If too dry, add a bit of milk or more blended cottage cheese.

Ingredients you will need

Below is a list of ingredients you will need to make this recipe. Full measurements are listed further down below in the recipe card.

ingredients to make edible cookie dough in a round bowl
  • Low-fat cottage cheese: I do not recommend fat-free cottage cheese. Go with full-fat or 2-4%. I really like the Good Culture Brand.
  • Almond flour: I used this here to keep the carbs low and protein high. You can use oat flour or coconut flour as well. Blue Diamond almond flour is a good choice, and I also use the Kirkland almond flour from Costco.
  • Maple syrup or honey: agave will work here, too.
  • Vanilla extract: Adds flavor.
  • Whey protein powder: I like using vanilla-flavored to keep the flavor right. Plant-based protein works too.
  • Chocolate chips: any kind works. I use the mini chocolate chips because they feel just right in edible cookie dough.

Here’s how to make this cookie dough with cottage cheese perfectly each time. Below is a video to help guide you.

process shot to blend cottage cheese and adding flour over the blended cottage cheese in a dish.

1️⃣ Blend the cottage cheese

Drain the cottage cheese of excess liquid and add it to a blender or food processor along with maple syrup or honey and vanilla extract. Blend until smooth. Pour the blended cottage cheese into a dish or bowl.

✏️ You can use your favorite brand of cottage cheese here; it won’t matter.

2️⃣ Add in the other ingredients

Add the protein powder and almond flour over the cottage cheese mixture. Mix well to combine.

✏️ I use vanilla-based protein powder. Use any flavor you have on hand that will be neutral tasting, similar to vanilla, like cake batter.

3️⃣ Add chocolate chips

Add the chocolate chips to the dough.

✏️ I used mini chocolate chips. You can use what you have on hand. If you want to use dairy-free or sugar-free, you can. You can also mix in some chopped pecans or walnuts.

4️⃣ Combine and refrigerate

Using a spoon or spatula, mix to combine. Transfer the cookie dough to a lidded container and store in the fridge for a bit before serving. This will help it firm up a bit. I say about 20 minutes will be good.

✏️ You can serve them with some crackers or enjoy them as is.

Frequently asked questions

How do you stiffen cookie dough?

If your cookie dough is too runny, add 1-2 tablespoons of whatever flour you are using at a time and mix until you get the consistency you are looking for.

Why is my cookie dough always runny?

Runny cookie dough means you added too much liquid, or in this case, too much cottage cheese and not enough flour. Just add in more flour and mix again. Don’t forget you must also drain the cottage cheese if you are using one that’s too wet.

How do I get my cookie dough to be thicker?

You can either add in more flour or cover it and let it sit in the fridge for 20-40 minutes to settle in and absorb all the excess liquid.
