Maybe it’s the grilled chicken strips, marinated in herbs and spices, maybe it’s the tangy tzatziki and crunchy veggies, or maybe it’s that the whole thing is wrapped up in a fluffy warm pita. Whatever the case, this Grilled Chicken Gyro is going to be a hit with your friends and family! Make and enjoy this easy gyro recipe in less than 30 minutes!

  • Chicken Breast: you may also use chicken thighs
  • Seasoning: Salt, pepper, oregano, rosemary, cumin.
  • Garlic
  • Lemon Juice
  • Tzatziki Sauce
  • Veggies: Persian cucumber, tomatoes, onion.
  • Pita Bread
  • Dill (optional)

How to make chicken gyro

  • Marinade the chicken – Place chicken strips in the marinade, mix thoroughly to coat the chicken. Ideally, allow the chicken to marinate for up to 1 hour.
  • Grill the chicken – Add chicken to a preheated grill and cook until grill marks appear and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes in total.
  • Prepare the gyros – Thinly slice the onion, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Microwave the pita bread for about 1 minute.
  • Assemble – Load up the pita bread with a spoonful of tzatziki sauce, then add warm grilled chicken on top of the sauce, finally add sliced onion, tomatoes, and cucumbers.
  • Garnish, serve, and enjoy!

Recipe notes and tips

  • You don’t have to marinate the chicken for an hour but it really does add a lovely depth of flavor.
  • Make sure to use a preheated grill.
  • Grease the grill with a bit of oil to prevent the chicken from tearing when you flip it.
  • You can use flatbread, pita, or naan bread.
  • Feel free to mix in other fresh veggies.
  • Make sure to make/buy a good amount of tzatziki – better to have too much than too little!
  • Garnish with fresh dill.

Ingredients

For the gyro meat:

  • 1.5 pound chicken breast, cut into strips
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt, or to your taste
  • 1/2 teaspoons ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice

To assemble:

  • 1 cup homemade tzatziki sauce
  • 1 large red onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 beef tomatoes, sliced
  • 2 Persian cucumbers, thinly sliced on the diagonal
  • 8 pita bread
  • fresh dill, to garnish, optional

Instructions

To make the grilled chicken:

  • Place the chicken strips in a large bowl and sprinkle with the seasonings. Add minced garlic, olive oil, and lemon juice. Mix thoroughly to coat the chicken, then if time allows marinate it in the fridge for up to 1 hour.
  • Preheat a grill pan over medium-high heat. Grease the grill with a bit of oil, then add chicken and cook until grill marks appear and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes in total.

To prepare the gyros:

  • While the chicken is cooking, prepare toppings.
  • Thinly slice the onion, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Microwave the pita bread for about 1 minute. For assembling, load up the pita bread with a spoonful of tzatziki sauce.
  • Add warm grilled chicken on top of the sauce. Add sliced onion, tomatoes, and cucumbers.
  • Garnish with fresh dill and serve immediately.

    These were really easy and good! I wish I had dill on hand but they were super flavorful nonetheless. My kids liked the marinated chicken which was a bit surprising because they usually prefer plain baked or grilled with s&p. I will be making your recipe again! Thanks!
