Ingredients you will need

ingredients laid out to make blue cheese dip.
  • Blue cheese: Crumbles of blue cheese are added for texture and that distinct tangy flavor that is so delicious.
  • Sour cream: Sour cream adds creaminess and a touch of tang to balance out the richness. Greek yogurt makes a great substitute.
  • Mayonnaise: Along with the sour cream, mayo binds the ingredients together, creating a smooth consistency.
  • Lemon juice: Brightens the taste.
  • Seasonings: Garlic powder, salt and ground black pepper enhances the flavor.

Variations/substitutions

  • Use lite or full-fat varieties of sour cream or greek yogurt and mayo.

My Pro Tip

Recipe Tip

  • Dried garlic: Fresh garlic is very flavorful, but for this dip I actually recommend dried garlic powder because it will combine nicely with the creamy base for delicious flavor throughout.
  • Double the recipe: This recipe makes 12 servings, and can easily be doubled if you’ll be serving a crowd.
  • Make it a dressing: To make this into a salad dressing, simply whisk in milk or buttermilk until you’ve reached desired consistency. It’s actually so delicious as a dressing!
  • Garnish: It’s optional, but for texture and an elegant presentation, I like to garnish this with extra blue cheese crumbles and either chives or sliced green onions.

Frequently asked questions

What is blue cheese dip made with?

Blue cheese dip typically contains crumbled blue cheese, various seasonings and sometimes herbs with a creamy base of sour cream and mayo.

How long can blue cheese dip be left at room temperature?

Since this dip contains dairy, it shouldn’t be left out for more than 2 hours at room temperature. If it sits out for up to 2 hours, I recommend covering it and placing it back in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before enjoying it again.

How long does blue cheese dip stay fresh?

If stored properly in an airtight container in the fridge, the dip will stay fresh for up to about 4 days. Give it a good stir, if it has been sitting very long and enjoy again.

What to serve with it

Blue cheese dip pairs well with a variety of different foods! It’s great with fresh vegetables, like carrot sticks, celery, bell pepper strips, radishes, and cucumber slices. However, you can also add pita bread, crackers, and chips to the platter, alongside this dip. My family also enjoys dunking meat and fries into it! Here are some options to try:
