These jalapeño poppers are the kind of appetizer everyone reaches for first at every gathering. They’re creamy, a little spicy, and baked until perfectly golden. They’re perfect for game day, parties, or anytime you need a quick crowd-pleaser. I love how simple they are to throw together, with big flavor and no frying required.

I used full-fat cheese for this recipe, but you may use lite or full-fat cream cheese. Serve them as a side with my Chicken Al Pastor recipe. Yummy! You may also like my mango salsa or bell pepper nachos, both perfect for game-day appetizers.

Below is a list of ingredients you will need. Full measurements are listed further down in the recipe card.

ingredients to make jalapeno poppers
  • Jalapeños: Use fresh, deseeded. Any other sweet pepper might work too if you do not like jalapenos.
  • Cream cheese: Let it get to room temperature. You can use full-fat or light cream cheese here.
  • Shredded cheddar cheese: Either full-fat or light will work here.
  • Seasonings: Everything bagel seasoning and Smoked paprika
  • Finely chopped parsley or chives

How to make Jalapeno Poppers

  • Preheat the oven to 425ºF.
process shot to make filling for jalapeno poppers and slicing the pepper in half.

Step 1: Slice the jalapeños in half lengthwise, then use a teaspoon to scoop out the seeds and white ribs, and discard them. Leaving the seeds in there will make them very spicy, and I highly recommend you remove them.

Step 2: In a medium bowl, combine the cream cheese, cheddar, and seasonings. You may also add any other seasonings you may like here, such as a bit of onion powder or garlic powder.

process shot to fill the jalapeno pepper and bake them.

Step 3: Stuff your jalapeno halves with the mixture, then place them on a lined sheet pan. Before baking, if you like, you can sprinkle some bread crumbs over each one.

Step 4: Bake for 8-10 minutes, until the cheese is melted and golden on top. Garnish with chopped parsley or chives.

Recipe Tips

  • I recommend wearing gloves when working with Jalapenos.
  • You may dip each jalapeno popper, cheese filling, face down if you prefer a bit of crunch. If topping with breadcrumbs, spray each one with cooking oil spray.
  • I do not eat bacon. But you can cook bacon bits on the side and add them in with the cheese-filling mix.

Common Questions

Why are my jalapenos not hot?

As mentioned above, the chemical in jalapenos that gives them heat is called capsaicin. If your jalapenos aren’t hot enough, it’s because they were picked too early and didn’t have enough time to accumulate sufficient capsaicin.

What do jalapeno poppers contain?

Many make jalapeno poppers differently, but they are generally hollowed out, stuffed with a mixture of cream cheese, spices, and sometimes ground meat, then breaded. They are then either deep-fried, air-fried, or baked.

What sauce goes well with jalapeno poppers?

Most people will dip them with some sort of creamy dip, like Ranch. You can dip them in marinara sauce or even ketchup.

Can I use any other peppers?

Yes. You may use mini sweet peppers instead.

How to make them in an air fryer

  • Preheat the air fryer to 375°F.
  • Once you’ve filled the jalapeno halves with the cheese mixture, it’s time to add them to the air fryer.
  • Place the poppers in the air fryer basket, leaving some space between each one. Air-fry at 375°F for 6-10 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • Let them cool for a few minutes before handling.

Storage & Reheating

  • Storing: If you have leftovers, place them in a container and store them in the fridge for up to 4 days.
  • Freezing: I do not recommend freezing these jalapeno poppers because the cheese does not hold well after thawing and will lose its firm texture.
  • Reheating: To reheat leftovers, you can either use the microwave, air fryer, or pop them back in the oven for about 5-6 minutes at 350F.
