Salmon is one of those ingredients that never gets old. It’s quick to cook, very versatile, and works just as well for busy weeknights, lunches, or meal prep. Whether you love it baked, grilled, air-fried, or tossed into bowls and salads, salmon is an easy way to get a nourishing, satisfying meal on the table.

When I was younger, I used to hate eating any fish, especially salmon, but I have grown to love it, and I introduced it to my kids at a young age, so they grew to love it too.

Tips for Cooking Salmon

  • Don’t overcook the salmon: Keep in mind that salmon cooks quickly. Once it flakes easily with a fork and looks opaque, it’s done.
  • Keep the seasoning simple: When in doubt, keep it simple with salt, pepper, lemon, garlic, and herbs that go a long way.
  • Use a thermometer if needed: If you aren’t sure when your salmon is cooked, use a thermometer. Salmon is perfectly cooked around 125–130°F for a tender, flaky texture.
  • Skin on or off works: Either one is fine and comes down to a personal preference. Skin-on helps keep salmon moist. You can always remove it after cooking.

Common Questions

What Type of Salmon is best for cooking?

Atlantic salmon is rich and tender, while sockeye has a firmer texture and deeper flavor. Both work well depending on the recipe. I almost always use Atlantic salmon, and if I can get my hands on wild-caught, even better.

Can I use frozen salmon?

Yes, you can definitely use frozen salmon. I recommend that you thaw it completely in the fridge and pat it dry before cooking.

How long does cooked salmon last in the fridge?

Cooked or leftover salmon lasts up to 3 days when stored in an airtight container.

Can I meal prep salmon?

Absolutely. It works best in bowls with rice, salads, and wraps, and reheats well.

What sides pair well with salmon?

Salmon goes well with different sides. Some great options are rice, roasted vegetables, salads, potatoes, quinoa, and simple pasta dishes, all of which pair beautifully.
