These homemade air fryer sweet potato chips are easy to make and so much better than store-bought varieties. Thinly sliced sweet potatoes get a light coating of oil and seasoning before crisping up to perfection in the air fryer.

Sweet potatoes make the perfect nutritious base for chips, providing fiber, vitamins, and minerals. And thanks to the air fryer, you can enjoy that fresh-from-the-fryer crispness with just a small amount of oil. These homemade sweet potato chips make a delicious snack on their own or pair beautifully with your favorite dipping sauces. I love to serve them alongside Sweet Potato Cheeseburger Sliders or Slow Cooker Pulled Chicken Burgers with Avocado Greek Yogurt Ranch Dip or Homemade Ranch Dressing for dipping!

  • Sweet potatoes: You’ll need 2 medium-sized sweet potatoes as the base for these chips. Choose firm, unblemished potatoes for best results.

  • Additional seasonings (optional): Get creative with dried herbs, chili powder, garlic powder or any other favorite spice blends to customize the flavor.

How to make sweet potato chips

  1. Preheat the air fryer: Preheat the air fryer to 350°F.
  2. Slice the sweet potatoes: Wash the sweet potatoes and use a sharp knife or mandoline slicer to cut them into very thin slices, about 1/8 inch thick.
  1. Season the slices: Place the sliced sweet potato rounds into a large bowl. Drizzle with the oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Use your hands or a spatula to toss everything together until the slices are evenly coated.
  1. Air fry in batches: Working in batches if needed, arrange the sweet potato slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket, taking care not to overcrowd them. Air fry for 8-10 minutes, shaking or tossing the basket halfway through, until the chips are lightly browned and crispy.
  1. Let chips cool slightly: Transfer the cooked chips to a wire rack or paper towel-lined plate and allow to cool slightly before eating for maximum crispness.
  2. Repeat with remaining batches: Repeat with any remaining batches of sweet potato slices.
  1. Serve and enjoy: Once cool enough to handle, transfer the chips to a serving bowl. Enjoy them plain or with your favorite dipping sauce!

Helpful Tips

  • Use a mandolin slicer for even thickness. Evenly thin slices around 1/8 inch are key for chips that crisp up uniformly in the air fryer.
  • Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket. Place the sweet potato slices in a single layer with a little room between them. Overcrowding leads to steaming instead of crisping. Work in batches as needed.
  • Let the chips cool completely before eating. The chips will continue crisping as they cool down on a rack or plate. Waiting until fully cooled gives you maximum crunch.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you make sweet potato chips crispy?

The keys to crispy air fryer sweet potato chips are slicing them very thinly, cooking them in a single layer, and not overcrowding the basket. Thin slices (around 1/8-inch thick) will crisp up nicely. Using a mandolin slicer helps get them ultra-thin. Let the cooked chips cool completely on a rack for maximum crunch.

Why did my sweet potato chips come out soggy?

If your sweet potato chips turned out limp or soggy instead of crispy, there are a few possible culprits. The slices may have been too thick to get fully crisp. Overcrowding the air fryer basket can also trap steam and make them mushy. Next time, slice them thinner, work in smaller batches, and cook until browned and crisped up.

What seasonings are good on sweet potato chips?

I love them with just salt and pepper, but you can also get creative with seasonings. Try sprinkling the chips with chili powder, Cajun seasoning, ranch seasoning, or a blend of garlic powder, paprika and cayenne. A light coating of cinnamon and sugar makes a sweet dessert chip.

Serving Suggestions

You can serve this sweet potato chips recipe alongside just about anything! I love eating them with a sandwich or burger like:

Storage Recommendations

These homemade sweet potato chips are best enjoyed fresh and crispy right out of the air fryer. However, if you do have leftovers, here are some tips for storing them:

  • Let chips cool completely before storing. Putting warm chips in a container will cause them to steam and get soggy. Place completely cooled chips in an airtight container or ziplock bag. Remove as much air as possible from the bag before sealing.
  • Store at room temperature for up to 2-3 days for maximum crispness and freshness. Refrigerating the chips can cause them to soften faster.
  • To re-crisp chips that have gotten a bit soft or stale, place them in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake at 300°F for 5-10 minutes until re-crisped.

Simple and easy snack or side dish made with sweet potatoes, avocado oil, salt, and pepper. Then air fried until perfectly crispy and crunchy.

Equipment

  • Air Fryer
  • medium bowl

Ingredients

  • 2 medium sweet potatoes, washed
  • 1 tablespoon avocado oil, olive oil, or coconut oil
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

Instructions

  • Preheat the air-fryer to 350F
  • Peel and slice the potatoes as thin as possible. Thinly slice the sweet potatoes about 1/8” thin using a mandolin slicer.
  • Place the sliced potatoes in a medium bowl and add salt, pepper, and oil.
  • Toss them together with your hands or spatula until they are all lightly coated.
  • Place the sweet potato slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket. They can be close but do not overlap and crowd the air fryer. You may have to work in batches.
  • Air Fry at 350°F for 8 to 10 minutes. The timing will vary based on your air fryer or the potatoes' thickness.
  • Open the air fryer halfway through the cooking time, and either toss them lightly or shake the basket.
  • Once the potatoes are cooked, remove them from the air fryer basket and add them to a cooling rack. If you are working in batches, then air fry the next batch.
  • Allow the chips to cool for 5-10 minutes on a rack. This will allow them to get more crispy.
  • Serve with your favorite dip and enjoy.

Notes

  • Use a mandolin slicer for even thickness. Evenly thin slices around 1/8 inch are key for chips that crisp up uniformly in the air fryer.
  • Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket. Place the sweet potato slices in a single layer with a little room between them. Overcrowding leads to steaming instead of crisping. Work in batches as needed.
  • Let the chips cool completely before eating. The chips will continue crisping as they cool down on a rack or plate. Waiting until fully cooled gives you maximum crunch.
