This easy Sautéed Cabbage is one of those side dishes you can make with just a few simple ingredients! The cabbage is cooked in a skillet with onions, garlic, and a little smoked paprika, then finished with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. A delicious side dish ready in less than 30 minutes.

I don’t think cabbage gets enough attention! It’s inexpensive, easy to cook, and goes with just about anything. I like adding a little smoked paprika for extra flavor and letting the cabbage cook long enough to get those golden edges. You don’t need much to make it taste good, and it’s a nice change from the usual steamed or roasted veggies.
Recipe Overview
Key Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need to make this sautéed cabbage. The full measurements are in the recipe card below.

- Green cabbage: You’ll need one medium head, about 2 pounds. Remove the core and slice it into thin strips.
- Olive oil: For cooking the cabbage and onions.
- Yellow onion: Adds flavor and a little sweetness as it cooks.
- Garlic: I use three fresh garlic cloves for this recipe.
- Smoked paprika and Onion powder: Add a little extra onion flavor and a touch of smokiness to the cabbage without making it spicy.
- Lemon juice: A squeeze of fresh lemon juice at the end makes a big difference.
- Fresh parsley: Optional, but nice for adding a little color before serving.
How to Make Sauteed Cabbage
Prepare the cabbage: Remove the outer leaves, quarter the cabbage, and remove the core. Slice the cabbage into thin strips.
Cook the onion: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced onion and cook for 3 to 4 minutes, until softened.

Add the garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, just until fragrant.
Add the cabbage: Add the sliced cabbage, smoked paprika, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Toss everything together until well combined.

Sauté: Cook for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender with some golden-brown edges. Don’t stir constantly. Letting it sit in the skillet for a minute or two helps it brown.
Finish: Remove from the heat and stir in the fresh lemon juice. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. Sprinkle with chopped parsley and serve warm.

Tips for the Best Sautéed Cabbage
- Use a large skillet: Cabbage takes up a lot of room before it cooks down. A large skillet or wide pot makes it easier to stir everything together.
- Don’t overcrowd the pan: If your skillet isn’t big enough, cook the cabbage in two batches. This helps it brown instead of steam.
- Slice the cabbage evenly: Thin, similar-sized strips will cook more evenly.
- Don’t stir too often: Let the cabbage sit in the pan for a minute or two between stirring so it can get some golden edges.
- Cook it how you like it: I prefer cabbage that’s tender but still has a little bite. If you like yours softer, cook it a few minutes longer.
- Add the lemon juice at the end: It adds a touch of freshness without overpowering the cabbage flavor.
Easy Variations
- Make it spicy: Add red pepper flakes or a little cayenne.
- Add carrots: Toss in 1 shredded carrot with the cabbage for a little sweetness and color.
- Make it Mediterranean: Skip the smoked paprika and add oregano, lemon zest, and extra fresh parsley.

What to Serve With Sautéed Cabbage
This cabbage pairs well with many different meals. Serve it with baked chicken cutlets, baked BBQ chicken breast, grilled salmon, or marinated Flank steak. It’s also really good with garlic-roasted potatoes or mashed potatoes if you want a simple dinner.
You can even add some cooked sausage or shredded chicken to the skillet and turn it into a quick meal.
Common Questions
Use a large skillet and avoid adding water. Cabbage releases moisture as it cooks, so giving it enough room in the pan helps that moisture evaporate. Don’t cover the skillet if you want lightly browned edges.
Yes. Remove any damaged outer leaves, rinse the cabbage, and pat it dry. You can also rinse the sliced cabbage and dry it well before adding it to the skillet.
Yes, but red cabbage has a slightly different flavor and may take a little longer to soften. It will also give the finished dish a different color.
Yes! You can make it a day or two ahead and keep it refrigerated. Reheat it in a skillet until warmed through. The cabbage will be a little softer after reheating.

Storage and Reheating
- Refrigerator: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
- Reheating: Warm in a skillet over medium heat for a few minutes, stirring occasionally, until heated through. Add a small drizzle of olive oil if needed.
- Freezing: You can freeze cooked cabbage, but it will be much softer after thawing. I recommend enjoying this recipe fresh or refrigerated for the best texture.
