This Olive Oil Bread Dip is made with extra virgin olive oil, garlic, herbs, Parmesan cheese, and balsamic vinegar for an easy restaurant-style appetizer that’s ready in minutes.

A Simple Appetizer I Make Again and Again
This olive oil bread dip is one of my favorite appetizers to make when I need something quick but impressive. It comes together in just a few minutes using simple ingredients I usually already have on hand, and it tastes just like something you’d get at your favorite Italian restaurant.
Whenever I serve it with warm crusty bread, everyone gathers around the bowl and it disappears fast. It’s simple, flavorful, and always a hit with family and friends.
Recipe Overview
Key Ingredients
Below are the ingredients you will need to make this bread dip. Full measurements are further down in the recipe card.

- Extra Virgin Olive Oil: The olive oil is the star of this recipe, so use a good-quality extra virgin olive oil for the best flavor.
- Fresh Garlic: Freshly minced garlic adds bold flavor and gives the dip its signature taste.
- Parmesan Cheese: Freshly grated Parmesan adds richness and a savory, salty flavor.
- Dried Oregano and Basil: These classic Italian herbs add depth and balance to the dip.
- Balsamic Vinegar: A splash of balsamic vinegar adds a subtle tang and enhances the overall flavor.
- Red Pepper Flakes: A small amount of red pepper flakes adds gentle heat without overpowering the dip.
- Fresh Parsley: Optional, but adds color and freshness.
How to Make Olive Oil Bread Dip
Combine the Seasonings: In a medium bowl, add the minced garlic, red pepper flakes, oregano, basil, Parmesan cheese, salt, black pepper, and parsley if using. Stir to combine.

Add the Olive Oil: Pour the olive oil and balsamic vinegar over the herb mixture.
Mix and Serve: Stir until everything is well combined. Serve immediately with warm focaccia, crusty bread, baguette slices, or your favorite bread for dipping.

Tips for the Best Olive Oil Bread Dip
- Use freshly grated Parmesan for the best flavor and texture.
- Allow the dip to sit for 10 to 15 minutes before serving so the flavors can develop.
- Finely mince the garlic to distribute the flavor evenly.
- Use high-quality extra virgin olive oil since it is the main ingredient.
- Serve with warm bread for the best experience.
Variations
- Add More Heat: Increase the red pepper flakes for a spicier dip.
- Add Sun-Dried Tomatoes: Finely chopped sun-dried tomatoes add extra flavor and texture.
- Add Fresh Herbs: Fresh basil, oregano, or rosemary can be used instead of dried herbs.
- Make It Cheesy: Add extra Parmesan or a sprinkle of Pecorino Romano cheese.
- Add Lemon: A squeeze of fresh lemon juice brightens the flavors and adds freshness.

Best Bread for Olive Oil Bread Dip
This dip pairs well with many different types of bread. Here are a few you can serve it with:
- Focaccia
- French bread
- Ciabatta
- Baguette
- Sourdough bread
- Italian bread
- Breadsticks
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using Low-Quality Olive Oil: Since olive oil is the primary ingredient, using a great quality olive oil will make a huge difference.
- Using Pre-Shredded Parmesan: Freshly grated Parmesan melts into the oil better and gives it the best flavor.
- Skipping the Rest Time: Allowing the dip to sit for a few minutes helps the garlic and herbs infuse into the oil.
- Adding Too Much Salt: Parmesan is naturally salty, so season gradually and taste before adding more salt.
Questions I Get Asked Alot
Yes. You can prepare it several hours in advance and store it covered in the refrigerator. Allow it to come to room temperature before serving.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Absolutely. Fresh basil, oregano, parsley, or rosemary all work well.
A good-quality extra virgin olive oil with a rich, fruity flavor works best.

Storage
Store leftover dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Because olive oil solidifies when chilled, allow the dip to sit at room temperature for about 20 to 30 minutes before serving.
