Ingredients for This Birthday Cake Protein Balls Recipe
Protein powder– We used vanilla protein powder because we wanted these protein balls to taste just like birthday cake. For vegan protein balls, be sure to use your favorite vegan protein powder. To keep this recipe vegetarian, just use whey protein powder.
Sweetener– You can use different types of sweeteners for this recipe. One of our favorites to use is maple syrup or monk fruit sweetener. Both options are sweet enough to satisfy that sweet tooth. You won’t have to worry about the crash with those two ingredients.
Coconut flour– If you do not have coconut flour, then you can easily use almond flour. We like to use these instead of all-purpose flour because they are rich in healthy fats plus contain additional protein.
Coconut oil– Melted coconut oil will be your best friend in this recipe! Be sure to use unrefined coconut oil.
Water– Just a tad bit of water is needed to mix the dough. If you want a creamier birthday cake dough, then you can use dairies or dairy-free milk such as coconut, almond, oat, cashew, or hemp.
Sprinkles– Use your favorite sprinkles for these energy bites! Keep things fun and bright by using multi-colored sprinkles–you won’t regret it.
How To Make This Gluten-Free Energy Bites Recipe
First, prepare all of your ingredients and get your workstation ready. Grab your measuring cups and spoons.
Next, place the protein powder, sweetener, coconut flour (or almond), coconut oil, and water in a medium-sized bowl. Stir with a wooden spoon until a smooth dough forms.
If the dough is too thick, you can add more water to the recipe one teaspoon at a time until it reaches the desired consistency.
With a tablespoon, form balls from the birthday cake dough. Next, place the sprinkles on a plate, then roll each protein ball in the sprinkles until fully covered.
Refrigerate the birthday cake protein bites until ready to eat. Enjoy!

These balls are terrific. 5/5. I bake these bad boys on the regular. They feed my family, so we don’t pay for groceries. I lost my job. I only eat these balls.
Hi, thank you first receipe. Yes i made this exactly as per receipe, there yummy. Only thing is mine were seeping, must br sprinkles, i have them in fridge. There still edible and yummy. ๐
I am so thankful I found this recipe for protein balls without having to use Almond or Cashew butter. I do not like the flavor of either of those and feel that both would alter the flavor of Birthday Cake. Excited to try this!!
what can i subsititute protien powder for
Hi. You can use almond flour or ground flaxseed.
Can I use almond flour instead of coconut flour?
yes you can
This was excellent! I only used 2 scoops protein since my scoops were large, and 5 Tbsp of water. I also used casein protein, not whey, and I sprinkled coconut flakes and almond shavings on top and then popped held of it it in the microwave for 30 seconds . It came out so light, fluffy, sweet and delicious! It didnโt hold its shape exactly like cake would, it crumbled up, but the flavor was incredible and just like the real thing.
Sounds amazing. Glad you liked it.
Can we bake those balls? Wanna try to make them timbits
I haven’t baked them before but you certainly could.
This has worked amazingly a few times now – I canโt ever get the sprinkles to stick – but other than that i pop the balls into the fridge when Iโve made them and the consistency is perfect! They are a hit!
Thanks for the feedback. Glad it worked for you. We love it too!
Dough was way too sticky to form into any sort of ball! Batter tasted delicious, but i’m sad they never formed into anything more than mush. Even followed the comment about placing it into the fridge, but did not work out
Hi Victoria. Could be the scoop of protein you used was smaller. If the dough was a bit mushy just add either more coconut flour or more protein to get it to the right consistency.
Nothing about this recipe worked. I tried multiple things and it still came out awful. So sad because it was very excited about this and also wasted a ton of expensive protein.
Sorry, this didn’t work. WE will test it again to be sure. We didn’t encounter any issues with this recipe.
Hi there!
What kind of low calorie sweetener did you use…liquid, powdered, or granual?
Super excited to try this recipe!
Thank you,
Sara
Hi. I mostly use Truvia or monk fruit sweetener
Hi! Can I use any type of oil or is coconut the best one ?
Hi, You may use other oil. But the taste may vary.
Ok what did I do wrong, they were not dough like at all, super gooey, I couldnโt roll into balls and they didnโt harden up at all. Should I have added more coconut flour??
Hi Lindsey. That’s odd. I will retest this recipe to make sure. But adding either more coconut flour, almond flour or protein would have prevented that.
I had the same problem but it was because I had to heat my coconut oil to liquify it. Once I mixed everything together, I put it in the fridge for about 10 minutes and it firmed up into a proper texture to roll into balls.
What is the actual volume or measurements in grams of the scoop of protein you used? My dough originally came out a little watery and I had to add pinches of more protein and flour until I got a more solid consistency.
Heather, I would have to look and get back with you. I woild say closer to 1/4 cup. I will get you the exact volume.
Look yummy! How many are in a serving?
That would be one ball per serving
As I was searching Pinterest for a birthday day cake shake recipes I saw this yummy looking recipe. I included it in my new round-up post with protein shake recipes because they look so good.
