Is Cocktail Shrimp Cooked or Raw?
So, if you get served cocktail shrimp it is most likely already cooked. The Shrimps may look raw but it actually isn’t. You buy the shrimp raw and you poach them gently at home to get them ready for your cocktail.
The best way to poach shrimps is to boil some salted water with a slice of lemon, a few peppercorns and then add the shrimps and let boil for a few minutes. Or to make things even easier you can buy already cooked shrimps.
Can you cook cocktail shrimp?
Keep in mind the shrimps in a cocktail shrimp recipe is already cooked! cooking it further will only toughen up the shrimps and make them chewier. If you buy the shrimps raw then yes you can poach them as discussed above. But is it not advisable to cook already cooked shrimp.

Mexican Shrimp Cocktail Recipe
- 1 pound Cooked and peeled shrimp
- ¼ cup Minced red onion
- ½ cup Tomatoes Seeded and diced
- 1 Avocado peeled, seeded and diced
- ¼ cup Minced cilantro
- 2 Tbsp Lime juice
- 1 Tbsp Olive Oil
- salt and pepper to taste
- Place all ingredients in a bowl and stir gently until combined. Spoon into glasses and serve immediately, or store covered in the refrigerator for up to 2 hours.
