I loved how this date nut bread recipe turned out, and I am positive that you would too. My kids sometimes prefer when I make this without the nuts but I much prefer the added walnuts. The dates and walnuts add a sweet kick and crunch to this bread that you will find so satisfying with each bite. Made with ripe bananas, coconut oil, coconut sugar, flour, nuts, and dates.
This is perfect to enjoy as a breakfast option or just enjoy as dessert. Nothing better than making homemade bread than buying an unhealthy version at the store!
Ingredients needed
These are what you will need to make this homemade banana nut bread. Full measurements and instructions are further down below in the recipe card. You can also find the printable version there as well.
- 3 Ripe bananas: Some of you may not like bananas, you can use 1 cup of applesauce or one cup of pumpkin puree.
- coconut oil, melted: other oil will work like avocado oil
- coconut sugar: you can use brown sugar
- eggs, lightly beaten
- vanilla extract
- all-purpose flour or any other flour
- whole wheat flour (see notes)
- baking soda
- salt
- walnuts: this is optional if you do not like nuts
- Medjool dates
How to make date nut bread
Preheat the oven to 350°F and lightly spray a loaf pan with coconut oil spray.
Remove the pit from the Medjool dates and chop them into small pieces together with the walnuts. Separate the chopped dates as they tend to stick and you don’t want a big clump in your banana bread.
In a mixing bowl mash the peeled bananas with a fork. Add in the coconut oil, sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract and whisk well to combine.
Sieve over the flours, baking soda and salt, then mix with a spatula to fully incorporate.
Fold in the chopped dates and walnuts to the mixture.
Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and bake for 50-55 min, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Allow the banana bread to cool completely before slicing it.
Recipe notes and tips
- Flour: Feel free to mix flour at a 50/50 ratio using any of your favorite flour. I have tested this with a 50/50 ratio of all-purpose and almond flour and it came out perfect.
- Oil: I used coconut oil, but other oils can be used, like vegetable oil, grapeseed oil, sunflower oil, or olive oil.
- Use a preheated oven. The bread will need a good 40-50 minutes, depending on the oven. Use a toothpick to check for doneness.
- Allow the date nut bread to cool off completely before cutting through.
- You may add other toppings like chocolate chips, but they are not needed at all. This banana date bread is sweet enough.
- Coconut sugar: You may use any other sugar like cane sugar, monk fruit, or brown sugar. Honey and Maple syrup also work, but use only 1/2 cup of either honey or maple syrup.
- For a vegan bread option, you may use an egg substitute like flax seeds or egg replacers.
Frequently asked questions
I prefer slicing the bread before freezing. If you want to freeze the whole bread to take to a potluck or for later use, then you can freeze it whole. Otherwise, it is better to freeze them pre-sliced so you can remove one slice at a time if needed.
This date nut bread is good on your kitchen counter for up to 3 days so long as they are covered or wrapped. You can store it wrapped in the fridge for up to 7 days. Consider slicing them and then place in a container before storing. To reheat your banana bread, simply microwave a slice for 20 seconds.
You can freeze Date bread for up to 3 months. Cut them into slices and individually wrap each one before freezing. Thaw in the fridge the night before and reheat in the microwave.

Delicious and easy to make. Followed exact recipe.
Thanks! So glad you loved it. I really appreciate your time and feedback

My go to recipe from now on. I have 4 loaves to bake! The one I just made is disappearing fast. I am trying to find the spot to add a picture because it is worth sharing. I added cranberries and chia seeds along with regular figs and walnuts. It is simply delicious!
I can’t even read the recipe with the best buy ad pop ups and ads!! Move on!
Just click on “Go to Recipe” and you will avoid all that chaos. I just made this recipe and it is fantastic. I even added chia seeds and cranberries for the holidays. Really a good recipe with great slicing ability, I used whole wheat through out because I was out of almond flour. Enjoy.
Delicious!
So moist. The best Banana bread
I agree! it’s so good! Thanks for the feedback
Is this a keto diet meal ?
Hi there. No this is not keto-friendly
Has anyone made this with regular dates rather than medjool?
Hi Kate. Any dates would work. Doesn’t have to be the Medjool brand.
