Ingredients you will need to make this vegan chia pudding

  • Chia Seeds: Use your favorite brand of chia seeds. Obviously, you will need this ingredient, and can’t be substituted. Use black or white chia seeds.
  • Unsweetened apple sauce: to get that intense apple pie flavor I recommend this ingredient. Or you can make your own apple sauce at home. It is very simple to make.
  • Milk of choice: For a vegan option, you will need to use dairy-free milk like coconut milk, almond milk, or cashew milk.

Recipe notes and tips

  • You may use any milk of your choice or a combination of different milk. Like almond milk with coconut milk, or coconut milk and 2% milk.
  • Consider making the chia pudding ahead, and make the apple pie topping when ready.
  • Toppings that work well will be pecans. Our second choice would be chopped almonds or walnuts.
  • Once you mix the chia pudding, allow it to sit for 5 minutes and mix again before letting it soak for the desired time.
  • Store the apple pie topping mixture separately if possible, and when ready to serve you may heat them up separately before topping off the chia pudding.
  • Make your own apple sauce at home or you may use store-bought apple sauce.
  • As for the apples, I love honey crisp but other apples can be used like Ambrosia or Pink lady.
  • When cooking the apple pie mix, allow them to cook until they are fork tender.
  • For a thicker and creamier chia pudding, use 1/4 cup of dairy-free vanilla yogurt.

Frequently asked questions

How long should chia seeds soak for pudding?

The longer the chia seeds soak the better. That being said, Chia seeds will need at least 20-30 minutes of soak time to reach that jelly-like pudding texture. For a thicker, softer, and creamier texture, let them soak overnight.

Do I need to wash the chia seeds?

No, chia seeds do not need to be soaked before they are used to make chia pudding or used in baking.

Is it OK to eat chia seeds raw?

Yes. Technically you can have chia seeds raw. They are typically added over smoothies or oatmeal bowls. They will feel a bit crunchy and if you do not like the crunchy texture, you can blend or grind them first.

Is it ok to add chia seeds to yogurt?

You sure can. Chia seeds are often times used with yogurt to make creamy thick chia pudding recipes. You may also sprinkle some chia seeds over your yogurt or yogurt parfait. In fact, it makes for a nice nutritious addition to your breakfast or snack bowl.
