How to make Apple Crumble
Making Homemade apple crumble is quite easy. There aren’t that many ingredients involved and we bet you already have most of it in your pantry and you just need to go grab some apples!
What you need to do:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F, and coat a 2 quarts casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray.
- In a mixing bowl combine together the oats, walnuts, cinnamon, maple syrup, and coconut oil. Using your fingers stir until crumbly. Set aside.
- In another bowl, toss the apples with the cornstarch, cinnamon, and nutmeg, until evenly coated.
- Transfer the filling to the prepared dish, and gently press down with a spatula. Sprinkle evenly with the oatmeal topping.
- Bake at 350°F for 25-35 minutes or until the apples are tender and the tops are crisp. Enjoy!
My Pro Tip 🫶🏻
Recipe Tip
- Allow the apple crumble to cool a bit before serving.
- You may use gluten-free rolled oats. I also do prefer using rolled oats over quick oats.
- Any crisp or tarte apple will work. You do not have to use green apples.
- If you do not want to add nuts that’s fine. But both walnuts and pecans will taste great.
- Serve with some healthier vanilla ice-cream options.
Frequently asked questions
No. Cooking the apples before baking is not necessary. They will bake in the oven and become just tender
Apple can be stored for later use and reheated at any time. Either reheat using the microwave or pop it back into the oven and bake for 10-15 minutes. If reheating frozen apple crumble, allow it to thaw in the fridge a day before or overnight before baking or reheating.
Choose an apple with a sweet-tart flavor like Granny Smith, Jonagold, or Honeycrisp.
Leftover Apple crumble can be refrigerated. Store in an airtight container or wrap firmly using cling wrap. Expect the topping to not be crunchy afterward because the oats do get soaked and become softer. If you are making apple crisp ahead, do not add the topping over the filling. Store the topping separately in a ziplock bag and pour over the filling before you place it in the oven to bake.
Apple crumble can be frozen for 3-4 months whether they are baked or unbaked.
YES. It is more of what your personal preference is. Some may like it cold so it can be enjoyed either hot or cold.

Notes
- Use rolled oats and not quick oats. A gluten-free option is fine too.
- Any tarte and crispy apple will work.
- Use light brown sugar instead of coconut sugar if you prefer.
- You may use melted butter in place of the coconut oil if you prefer.
- Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 5 days.
- Ovens vary, keep an eye on it and if the apples look tender and the oats are browned by 30 minutes you can remove them from the oven.
- I love the walnuts in this recipe but if you want to use pecans or almonds that’s fine too.

I look forward to making this dish. I’ll let you know when I make it.
I hope you love it
Delicious!!
Does it need to be refrigerated and how long?
You could for 1-2 hours
Very dry…
what can I Substitute for maple syrup, and what can I substitute for cornstarch. Will the easy oatmeal crumble turn out ok ?
Sub maple syrup with honey or agave. Corn starch is needed so it thickens up. You can try arrowroot powder.
Hi Rena,
For the nutrition fact, is it per serving or the whole recipe? Thanks.
Hi there. It’s per serving.
So I tried this, but the filling came out very dry. Like the apples were completely dry, with no sauce. It still tastes good, but more like a nice version of baked oatmeal rather than a crumble. Do you know what could have gone wrong?
Hi. Did you make any substitutes to the recipe?
It tastes delicious but I’m confused why mine looks completely different to the pictures. My filling is very dry and just falls apart when I try to scoop it up, there isn’t that nice gooey texture that I hoped for. Do you have any ideas why?
This is the first time I made a crumble using oats and I’m a wheat intolerant so they were gluten free oats. I didn’t measure the ingredients because I was making a small amount for myself but wow!! This was sooo delicious and no sugar or butter!!!Amazing!! Will make this more often as it starts getting colder. Thanks for the recipe
