This Viral onion ring chips recipe is taking social media by storm and I had to give it a try myself. The kids were even more excited to try these so I made it and it is worth all the hype. I highly recommend that you give it a go since you can technically make it with only two ingredients. Onions and shredded parmesan cheese. You can get store-bought parmesan cheese or shred your own. I do recommend adding the seasonings to add in more flavor. So good!

Tips from my kitchen

  • Don’t cut the onions too thick or they will just be soggy or not cooked enough by the time the cheese turns golden brown.
  • This recipe does only need the 2 ingredients but adding seasonings is a bonus.
  • If you do not have a mandolin slicer using a sharp knife and cut as thin as possible.
  • Don’t forget to use parchment paper.
  • Allow it to cool! This hardens up the cheese and gives you that crispy crunch.
  • What I found helpful is placing a cutting board over the pan and flipping it to the other side so you can easily peel the parchment paper off and cut them on the cutting board.

Common Questions

Can I use any onions?

I recommend using either sweet white onions or yellow onions.

Can I shred parmesan cheese myself?

Yes. Shredding your own parmesan cheese is even better.

Can I add other seasonsings?

Absolutely. Add in any seasonings you prefer. It doesn’t have to be the ones I used.

How do I store these onion ring chips?

If you have leftovers, you can store them in the fridge for up to 2 days. They will lose their crunch. I saved a few on my counter covered on a plate for one of my kids for about 3 hours, but they lost their crunch. Just fyi. Maybe leave them uncovered if you plan to eat them within a few hours. I do not recommend freezing.

Notes

  • I find small to medium sized onions work best.
  • Be careful not to burn the cheese or else it will taste bitter. Oven temperatures vary so start checking it at 16 minutes.
  • Slice the onions thin or else they will come out soggy. If you don’t have a mandolin slicer, just use a sharp knife and slice as thin as possible.
  • If you don’t have cooking oil spray, just dab the onions with a bit of olive oil or avocado oil with a brush.
  • You technically only need the onion and parmesan cheese to make this. The seasons just add flavor.
