I have been loving using sweet potatoes lately to make desserts, like this sweet potato bread and these sweet potato brownies that have gone mega viral on social. My kids also love it when I make these sweet potato muffins and these sweet potato cookies. Before you get started

  • There are different ways to cook the sweet potatoes, which you can do ahead of time, like the day before, to save time. You can either boil it, steam it, bake it, or just microwave it. I like to wet a couple of paper towels and wrap the sweet potato with it. Then microwave it for 3-5 minutes depending on the size of the sweet potato. Remember it is hot when you open the microwave so handle with care.
  • I used coconut oil, but you can swap that with any neutral-tasting oil like avocado oil or vegetable oil. Melted butter works just fine.

Ingredients and Substitutions

Below is a list of ingredients I used to make this bread and some suggestions on how you can make it your own. Full measurements are listed further down in the recipe card.

  • Sweet potatoes: I used 2 medium sweet potatoes, mashed. They came out to 1 and 1/4th cup. You can use pumpkin puree instead.
  • Oil: You need oil or melted butter. I used coconut oil, but you can use avocado oil or whatever you have on hand.
  • Eggs: You can use egg substitute if you plan to make these vegan.
  • Vanilla extract
  • Sugar: I used coconut sugar. Brown sugar works or any sugar on hand like cane sugar or sweeteners used for baking.
  • Flour: I like to use all-purpose flour. Any other flour will work.
  • Seasonings: cinnamon and nutmeg. They add flavor and warmth to the bread.
  • Baking soda and salt
  • Dark chocolate chips, optional, or chopped walnuts

How to Make Sweet Potato Bread

Here’s a step-by-step process on how you can make this recipe perfectly each time.

Preheat the oven to 350°F and prepare a 9×5 loaf pan with parchment paper.

1️⃣ Prepare the wet and dry ingredients

In a bowl, add the mashed potatoes, coconut oil, eggs, vanilla, brown sugar, and coconut sugar. Using a whisk, mix everything well to combine. Set aside.

In a separate bowl, add the flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and baking soda. Whisk to combine.

2️⃣ Combine wet and dry ingredients

Add the flour ingredients over the wet sweet potato ingredients. Mix to incorporate.

Add in the chocolate chips (if using) and mix well to combine.

✏️ If you want to use nuts in place of the chocolate chips, you can do so here. Walnuts or pecans would be great options.

4️⃣ Bake and Serve

Transfer the batter into the loaf pan, top with more chocolate chips if you like, and bake for 50-55 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Can I use canned sweet potatoes?

Yes. You want to use canned sweet potato puree and not candied sweet potatoes that have added flavor and sugar. Go for organic sweet potato puree without any added ingredients or preservatives.

How Long does it last?

This sweet potato bread lasts on the kitchen counter covered for 24 hours. After that, I suggest you store it in a container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Can I freeze it?

Yes. You can freeze it for up to 3 months. Use a freezer-safe bag or container.

  • 1 1/4 cups mashed sweet potatoes, about 2 medium sweet potatoes
  • ½ cup coconut oil, or avocado oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar, or coconut sugar
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour, or flour of choice
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup dark chocolate chips, optional, or chopped walnuts
