how to make these spicy watermelon sticks

  • Cut the watermelon: Use a large sharp knife to slice the watermelon lengthwise or into big slices. Then, trim off the edges. Finally cut the meat of the watermelon (the red part) lengthwise, cutting more on the thin size, so they like watermelon fries.
  • Garnish: Dust with some chili powder (depending on the level of heat you want), garnish with lime wedges. Enjoy!

recipe tips and notes

  • To make it kid friendly you can omit the chili powder, or dial it back for a subtler kick.
  • If you can find Tajin seasoning give it a try on these Watermelon Sticks! Tajin is a Mexican seasoning that’s awesome on fresh fruit. it’s includes salt, chili and lime.
  • Add a dip. Watermelon fries love a creamy dip! Have some coconut yogurt (to keep this dairy free) or coconut flavored yogurt on the side. It’s a super satisfying combo that adds a creaminess to proceedings.
  • Want it sweeter? Try a sprinkle of coconut sugar for extra sweetness or leave it out if it’s sweet enough already.

How do you tell a watermelon is ripe?

Do you ever see people at the stores tapping on watermelons? Some use this method to pick their watermelons. If it gives a nice ringing sound then it’s ripe and ready. Other ways to check is to pick it up and feel if its heavy for its size. Also, check the bottom ground spot. This is where the watermelon sits on the ground. Make sure it has a creamy yellow color and not white.

In moderation, watermelon can help in weight loss. They have high water content and low in calories which will help to keep you feeling full and eat less. There are only 46 calories in every cup of cut watermelon.

You simply cut up the watermelons into ‘fries’, sprinkle some lime over them, and if you are using chili powder you sprinkle or garnish with chili powder. That’s it!

can I make these watermelon sticks in advance?

If you want to prep ahead of time, you can cut up the watermelon a few days in advance, but the season just before serving.

When storing the watermelon sticks, wrap in the plastic, and they should keep in the fridge for about 3 days. Also, the plastic will stop the watermelon from absorbing the flavors of other foods and will keep its flesh moist.
