Make A Box Cake Mix Taste Homemade

Store-bought cake mix can certainly save you time in the kitchen, but it doesn’t always taste like it comes from the heart. If you don’t have hours to spend making something from scratch, you might still be able to get that homemade taste from a box. You just have to put a little twist on the ingredients and present the final result in a straight-from-the-heart kind of way. Here are some tips to help you make a box cake mix taste homemade.

Add Custom Ingredients 

You can use a boxed cake mix as a foundation for other ingredients you want to incorporate. You could add nuts to the cake for extra texture, or you could mix in candy, coconut, or even pretzels. Think about your favorite ingredients and blend them into the mix. Custom touches like this will make people think it’s a homemade recipe.

Note: If you are going to add nuts to a cake mix, you may want to add extra milk or water to the recipe. The nuts are absorbent, so they could turn an otherwise moist cake into a dry one. Test out proportions in advance before serving this at a big party. 

Make Your Own Frosting 

The frosting is the first splash of flavor that hits someone’s mouth. If you can make that from scratch, you might be able to convince someone that everything else is made from scratch. Get a really good frosting recipe and whip something up. This won’t take long, and it will take away that store bought aftertaste that no one likes in his mouth.

Put Thought Into The Presentation 

If a cake looks homemade, it will taste homemade – theoretically. The ingredients will determine how successful that statement really is, but you will have a much easier time convincing someone if your cake looks like it came from your heart. Dirty ice the cake and add some homespun decorations to the top. Just make it look like you put some real time into its development.

You don’t have to be a professional pastry chef to make a great tasting cake, nor do you have to spend hours on end in the kitchen. Put some thought into customizing your store-bought cake in a box, and you will be able to get a great-tasting cake that people think you slaved away for.

Healthy Holiday Treats Kids Love To Make (And Eat!)

The holidays are a great time of year to show off your cooking skills, but they can also be a fun time to bond in the kitchen with your children. If you want to give your kids something to make for the holidays without an instant sugar rush, the recipes below will be the perfect fit. Here are some simple and healthy holiday treats that kids love to make – and eat!

Grinch Kabobs

Grinch kabobs are a holiday staple in my household, and they are so simple to put together. All you need is a set of toothpicks, some green grapes, a banana, and some mini marshmallows. Rinse off the fruit, slice the banana into small rounds, and chop off the top of the strawberries. Then assemble the ingredients in the following order on a toothpick: grape, banana slice, strawberry (flat side toward banana), and marshmallow. You should end up with a tiny Grinch face that tastes great too!

Strong Cheese Snowmen

If your kids love string cheese, they are going to love putting these together. Just get a set of white string cheese in individual wrappers, making sure that the wrappers are clear and have no advertisements on them. Cut out small top hats from black construction paper or cardstock to put at the top of the cheese, and then use a ribbon to create a scarf about an inch below the hat. Use a black Sharpie to draw on the buttons and the face, and then use an orange Sharpie to create the nose. You should end up with a super cute treat that your kids will want to show off.

Strawberry Santas

There are several ways to go about making these appetizers, and some are a little more complicated than others. For all of the recipes, you need a set of large strawberries, rinsed and sliced so that the pointed end forms a small “hat.” You can choose to hollow the strawberries with a paring knife if you want to fill them up, or you can leave them as they are.

You will need a white, whipped substance to go in between the body and the hat, forming the appearance of a beard. That could be low fat whipped cream, or it could be a beaten mixture of one 8 ox pack of softened cream cheese, 4 tablespoons of powdered sugar, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. For canned whipped cream, you may squirt it directly on the strawberry. For the mixture or whipped cream in a tub, use a piping bag or a freezer bag with a hole in the corner to control the flow.

Squirt your cream into the strawberry so it fills the bottom and covers the top like a fluffy beard. Then put the “hat” on top and add a tiny dab of whipped cream to the tip. You may also add whipped cream buttons to the front of the belly and seeds or raisins for eyes.

Play around with these delicious holiday treats, and you’ll be bonding with the kids in no time!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Bites

Hi guys. I feel like its been forever since I posted anything on my blog. 🙂 I was so busy two weeks ago trying to get ready for our Disney trip.  We just got back yesterday. The trip was very nice. I plan to add a few pics up soon. I didn’t realize how hot and humid it was though. It was nice to get away but it was tough with 5 kids. Plus the baby was sick so it made it harder to do anything. Overall it wasn’t the best trip but we had a great time 🙂

So Back to this post. My kids like these. We always make my other Cookie Dough Balls. But one day my daughter said “Mommy why don’t you make chocolate cookies instead” and thus this was created. Feel free to use Dark chocolate chips instead of peanut butter chips and of course the sprinkles are the kids ideas as well. Hope you enjoy this as much as we do.

Peanut Butter Rice Krispy Bars

These Rice krispy Bars were just amazing. Very simple and easy to make. I used the Arrowhead Mills Puffed Rice Cereal. I see it at every grocery store so it shouldn’t be too hard to find. We don’t make that many treats at our house. My kids like the plain sponge cakes, muffins and banana bread. Well of course they also love cookies.

You can store these in an air tight container in the fridge for a few days. I haven’t tried freezing them. They only make about 6 medium bars. It is ideal to use all natural peanut butter or you can make your own peanut butter by blending salted or unsalted peanuts using a high speed food processor.

I have made this with Honey, Cane sugar syrup and Brown rice syrup and they have all came out great but slightly different flavor. Hope you enjoy it if you do try it.

Peanut Butter Cookie Dough

Oh Yummy right? I decided to make these because my other cookie dough balls were such a hit. We actually liked these even more. They have the intense taste of peanut butter and No you don’t have to bake them since they have no eggs. They are  made of 4 simple ingredients.  Please note that the main ingredients are nuts so if you are on a low fat diet this is not for you.  Sure they are healthy fats if you are on a low carb diet. Making healthy deserts is kind of hard because they would have to be either high in carbs or high in fat. We don’t bake much at our house because we eat more fruits instead.

It took me a few tries to get the right consistency for these. It all depends on the brand of peanut butter you use. I always use all natural peanut butter. Just know that if the peanut butter is somewhat watery you will need more almond meal. Just add enough till the consistency is thick enough to roll.



* Can store in air tight container and save in fridge

** Depending on which brand of Peanut Butter you use, you may need to add more almond meal if they are too mushy and hard to roll.

Chocolate Chip Muffins

These Chocolate chip muffins are very delicious and filling. My twins always help me bake. Actually its more like they force themselves in my kitchen to bake with me. Typically if something takes 10 minutes to make it will end up taking me 20 with much more mess to clean up in the end. There is no way around it. My one boy, Sam is definitely going to be an engineer or chef. Or possibly both? He wants nothing to do with learning. At 4 his twin is reading already but Sam has no clue yet. All he cares about are things that make noise like vacuums or cooking. He almost knows the ingredients for the muffins by heart. He will run and grab the coconut oil, an egg, the sugar, baking powder and goes right to peeling the bananas and start mashing them…. hahahha  I shouldn’t complain right? It just gets worse though because then they get to the “no its my turn now, no I want to mix, hey let me lick spoon first, hey mommy I didn’t get a turn Sam got 2 turns”….Ya exactly! By the time the muffins are done I have the worst anxiety ever..

So these muffins are very similar to my Banana Bread recipe. I just add a few new ingredients and boom we end up with a whole new creation. Now Please note that these muffins are huge. I used the Large Muffin pan that makes 6. I intended on making smaller sizes but I couldn’t find the pan. I think a smaller muffin would be an ideal portion because I tried eating one large muffin and I have to admit I just couldn’t finish the last 3-4 bites I was so full. But I have the nutrition facts listed below for both sizes and you can decide. I also try not to use sugar substitutes when I bake for my kids. I mush prefer using honey or brown sugar. I have use sugar substitutes for baking before but I decided to stop. Feel free to use some in place of brown sugar. Hope you enjoy!

Chocolate Chip Banana Bread

3/4 Cup Oat Flour
3/4 Cup Whole Wheat Flour
3 Ripe Bananas (mashed about 1 Cup)
1 large Egg
1/4 Cup Coconut Oil (melt in microwave for 10-15 seconds if needed)
1 Tsp Vanilla
1/4  Cup Brown Sugar or Honey (can use sweetener of choice)
1 Tsp Baking Powder
1 Tsp Baking Soda
1 Tsp Cinnamon
1/4 Tsp Salt
1/4 Dark Chocolate Chips (optional)
Cooking spray
Topping: rolled oats and dark Chocolate Chips


1) Preheat oven at 350 F.  Then place all dry ingredients in a large bowl. These are flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and cinnamon. Leave the sugar or honey for wet ingredients.

2) In a separate bowl mix wet Ingredients. These are  sugar/honey, mashed bananas, egg, oil and vanilla.

3) Pour wet ingredients over dry ingredients and mix well.

4) Place batter in a greased pan and top with chocolate chip and rolled Oats if using. Bake for about 35-45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out dry.

Double Chocolate Chip Muffins

3/4 Cup whole wheat flour
3/4 Cup oat flour
2 Tbsp cocoa powder
1 Ttsp baking powder
1/2 Tsp baking soda
1/4 Tsp salt
1/2 Tsp cinnamon
1 Cup almond milk
1 Egg
1/2 Cup pumpkin puree
1/2 Cup maple syrup
2 Tbsp applesauce
1 Tsp vanilla extract
1/3 Cup chocolate chips


1) Mix the wet ingredients separate from the dry

2) Blend everything together & then add chocolate chips

3) Spoon into lined muffin tin

4) Bake at 375 for about 25 minutes or  until tooth pick comes out clean.

Vegan Brownies

1/2 cup coconut oil
3/4 cup natural cane sugar
2 flax eggs (2 tbsp flaxseed + 6 Tbsp water)
1 tsp vanilla extract
3/4 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp sea salt
1/2 cup cocoa powder
3/4 cup all purpose flour
1/3 cup walnuts



1) Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and grease 8 muffin tins with coconut oil.

2) Prepare flax eggs in a small bowl and let rest for 5 minutes.
Place oil in a large mixing bowl and melt it. Then stir in the flax egg, sugar, vanilla, baking powder, salt and cocoa powder. Whisk to combine.

3) Lastly, add the flour, then fold in walnuts.
Scoop mixture evenly into muffin tins until 3/4 full and bake for 25 minutes, or until the brownies start to pull away from the sides. Be careful not to overcook or they will get crumbly. Remove from oven and let rest in the tin for 5 minutes before removing to cool completely on a plate or cooling rack.

4) Serve with Pitaya ice cream and blueberry.

Strawberry Breakfast Yogurt

Strawberry Breakfast Yogurt

Serving Size: 4


1 1/2 Cup Non-Fat Greek Yogurt
2 Tbs Honey
1 Cup Fresh Strawberries, chopped and Hulled
4 Slices Whole Grain Bread
Fresh Fruit of choice to garnish (Peaches and Strawberries)


1. Clean, Hull, and chop the fresh strawberries and process for a few seconds

2. Add the blended strawberries to the Greek yogurt Along with the honey. Mix well using a spoon or fork. Place in a bowl.

3. Toast Whole Grain bread and cut into strips to garnish around the yogurt dip along side fresh fruits for dipping. Add a drizzle of honey over yogurt if desired.

4. Serve immediately and Enjoy!
