How to make homemade bagels

Preheat oven to 350F.

In a large mixing bowl, add the flour and the Greek Yogurt. Using your hand or spatula, mix until a dough is formed.

Sprinkle some flour over a cutting board or any flat surface. Pour the dough over it. The dough will be a bit sticky. You may need to add a bit of flour on your hands to handle the dough. Or some pam spray.

Divide the dough into four equal parts and roll out each one to form a mini log. Form a circle with it and combine each end to form a round bagel. Essentially you could simply roll the dough into a ball and using your finger create a hole in the middle.

If using egg wash, brush each bagel with some egg wash and sprinkle with whatever toppings you are using.

Place the bagels over a sheet pan lined up with parchment paper and bake them at 350F for 22-25 minutes or until they are browned. Enjoy.

Recipe notes and tips

  • Flour: Use self-rising flour if possible. If you do not have self-rising flour, then use 1 cup of all-purpose flour with 1-1/2 teaspoon of baking powder with 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
  • Yogurt: Do not use plain yogurt. It has a lot more moisture than Greek Yogurt. If you do, you would have to adjust the amount of flour you are using. Start with 1 Cup and gradually add 2 tablespoons at a time to make sure it’s not too sticky to handle.
  • All ovens vary. At 350F ours needed 25 minutes. It may take anywhere between 25-32 minutes until they turn golden brown.
  • Toppings are optional and do not add any calories. Like sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or everything but the bagel seasonings.
  • Egg wash. This will help achieve that golden top and allow the seasonings to stick to the bagel. You can use a small amount of melted butter.
  • Air fryer option: You can make these bagels in the air fryer instead. Air fry at 375F for 10-12 minutes or until they are golden brown.

      1. Why use self rising or all purpose white flour, why not stone ground whole wheat, almond flour, oat flour or any other better flour? I prefer healthier options.

      2. Hi. You definitely can. The whole viral concept was for using only 2 ingredients. You can use any flour of your choice pretty much you just need to add 1-1/4 tsp of baking powder and 1/4 tsp of salt. Using almond flour is a bit tricky. You would need to add an egg, 2 cups of almond flour, and baking powder. The recipe does change. I will be testing it with just almond flour and yogurt to see how it works. It may fall apart. Will do an updated post
